President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his Zambian counterpart Hakainde Hichilema are co-chairing the inaugural Zimbabwe-Zambia Bi-National Commission (BNC) in Harare on Friday, marking a historic upgrade in diplomatic relations between the two neighbours after 45 years of cooperation.
The BNC replaces the long-standing Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation, elevating bilateral engagement to a more strategic and results-oriented framework.
The launch coincides with the 45th anniversary of formal diplomatic ties between Zimbabwe and Zambia, rooted in a shared liberation history and decades of collaboration in trade, energy, tourism, and regional integration.
Ministerial and senior officials’ meetings have been underway in Harare since Wednesday, laying the groundwork for expanded cooperation across key sectors.
The BNC is expected to serve as a platform for translating diplomatic dialogue into measurable outcomes that benefit both nations and the broader Southern African region.
The two countries, which share the Victoria Falls and Kariba Dam along Zambezi River, currently cooperate in the areas of energy generation, tourism and the conservation of wildlife resources.
They are working towards the implementation of the joint management plan for the Victoria Falls World Heritage Site and the operationalisation of the 24-hour Victoria Falls-Livingstone One Stop Border Post.
