Cresta Sprayview Vic Falls completes major refurbishment

All 65 bedrooms and suites at Cresta Sprayview in Victoria Falls have been completely refurbished as part of a major upgrade programme taking place in the hotel.

Cresta Hotels’ managing director Rutendo Badenhorst said the programme was aimed at maintaining competitive status and enhancing the guest experience in one of the resort city’s best-known hotels.

“Within the Cresta group we have a standard policy of regular refurbishment programmes in all our hotels, to allow for maintenance of the highest standards of physical infrastructure and to meet ever-increasing guest expectations,” she said.

In the 60 bedrooms and five suites decor and fittings have been changed, with a new feature of open closets, while bathrooms have been renovated and exteriors given a makeover. Gardens across the property have been extensively revamped, making full use of the trees, flowerbeds and lawns to enhance the ‘clean and green’ look of the bedroom wings that stretch out across the grounds.

Built originally by the well-known Gardini family and we long one of the resort’s best-known establishments, Cresta Sprayview was first opened as Peter’s Motel, the third hotel to be built in the resort. It later became the Victoria Falls Motel, and has since 2013 been operated by the Cresta Group as Cresta Sprayview.  it features prominently in the Cresta Hotels portfolio, which includes operations in Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa.

“We are very proud of the ongoing success and achievements of Cresta Sprayview, which fills an important niche in Victoria Falls as a destination for international, regional and local tourists, as well as hosting small to medium conferences and banqueting events,” said Mrs Badenhorst.

“The exciting growth of travel and tourism into and across Zimbabwe is a major boat for all of us in the sector and it is important for us to remain industry leaders in our field of operations, which means continuous improvement to physical infrastructure, service and operational activity. “

Next up in the refurbishment programme are upgrades to the restaurant, lounge and bars, work which has already started and will end in 2026.

UAE’s ASB Hospitality Snaps Up Zimbabwe’s Iconic Kingdom Hotel for $30 Million

In a big win for Zimbabwe’s growing tourism scene, Dubai-based ASB Hospitality has bought the famous Kingdom Hotel in Victoria Falls for $30 million. This marks the company’s second major move in the country, following its $20 million purchase of the Meikles Hotel in Harare back in 2019. The 294-room property, which sits right by the stunning Victoria Falls—a UNESCO World Heritage site that draws about 400,000 visitors each year—shut down in 2023 over a lease dispute but now looks set for a fresh start under new branding. Seller First Capital Bank, along with its pension fund, is cashing out to sharpen its focus on core banking, using the money to pay taxes and strengthen operations. For everyday Zimbabweans and travellers, this deal could mean more jobs in hospitality and better spots to stay, as the sector bounces back with 1.6 million visitors bringing in $1.2 billion in 2024. It also shows stronger ties between Gulf investors and Africa, especially as Forbes named Zimbabwe the world’s top travel spot for 2025 for its wildlife safaris and cultural treasures.

ASB Hospitality, a unit of Albwardy Investment, manages 18 luxury properties across four continents with over 1,300 rooms. This buy expands its African footprint, coming hot on the heels of grabbing a majority stake in Lusaka’s Taj Pamodzi Hotel in Zambia. For Zimbabwe, hit hard by economic woes but rich in natural wonders, such investments signal hope for revival in a sector key to earning foreign cash and creating work for locals.

The Kingdom Hotel: A Riverside Gem Ready for Rebirth

The Kingdom Hotel, now owned by Makasa Sun Private Limited before the sale, boasts 294 rooms and prime views of the Zambezi River, just minutes from Victoria Falls—one of the world’s largest waterfalls. Built in the 1990s with an African-inspired design mixing modern comforts and local vibes, it has long been a favourite for tourists seeking adventure like bungee jumps or wildlife safaris. But a lease row led to its closure in 2023, leaving the site idle and hurting local jobs.

ASB plans a grand relaunch, likely rebranding it to fit its luxury style, similar to turning Meikles into Hyatt Regency Harare—The Meikles. This could include upgrades to rooms, dining, and facilities to attract high-end visitors. With Victoria Falls pulling in crowds year-round, the hotel’s comeback could add to Zimbabwe’s tourism push, which aims for $5 billion in revenue by 2025 through spots like Hwange National Park and Mana Pools.

ASB Hospitality: Expanding Footprint in Africa’s Hospitality Boom

ASB Hospitality, based in Dubai, is part of Albwardy Investment—a family-owned group with roots in East Africa and a focus on luxury stays. Led by Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Aldhaheri, it runs upscale spots like the Hyatt Regency in Harare and now eyes more in the region. The company’s buy of Taj Pamodzi in Zambia shows a plan to grow in southern Africa, where tourism is rebounding post-COVID.

For Zimbabwe, ASB’s involvement brings know-how in running top hotels, potentially creating hundreds of jobs in services, maintenance, and supply chains. Local suppliers could benefit from deals for food, linens, and crafts, helping small businesses grow. This fits Zimbabwe’s goal to hit 5 million tourists by 2025, up from 1.6 million in 2024, bringing in more dollars to ease economic strains.

First Capital Bank’s sale lets it drop a non-core asset, focusing on banking while pocketing cash to boost lending and operations. The bank’s pension fund, a joint owner, also gains from the deal, securing funds for retirees.

A Closer Look: Facts Behind the Deal

In a major deal set to breathe new life into Zimbabwe’s hospitality scene, Dubai-based ASB Hospitality has acquired the renowned Kingdom Hotel in Victoria Falls for $30 million. This marks the company’s second significant investment in the country, following its $20 million purchase of the Meikles Hotel in Harare in 2019. The 294-room riverside property, which closed in 2023 due to a lease dispute, is now poised for a grand relaunch under fresh branding, potentially attracting more visitors to one of Africa’s top natural wonders. For everyday Zimbabweans, this could mean fresh job opportunities in tourism, a sector that welcomed 1.6 million visitors in 2024 and generated $1.2 billion in revenue. The transaction also signals deepening ties between Gulf investors and African markets, especially as Zimbabwe earns global praise for its wildlife safaris and cultural treasures, recently crowned by Forbes as the world’s top travel destination for 2025.

ASB Hospitality, a subsidiary of Albwardy Investment, manages 18 luxury properties across four continents with over 1,300 rooms. The acquisition expands its African footprint, coming shortly after securing a majority stake in Lusaka’s Taj Pamodzi Hotel in Zambia. For Zimbabwe, grappling with economic challenges but rich in attractions like Victoria Falls—a UNESCO World Heritage site drawing 400,000 visitors yearly—this investment offers hope for revival in a key industry that supports thousands of livelihoods.

The Kingdom Hotel: A Prime Asset Ready for Rebirth

Nestled along the Zambezi River just minutes from the majestic Victoria Falls, the Kingdom Hotel boasts 294 rooms designed with an African-inspired aesthetic that blends modern comfort with local charm. Built in the 1990s, it has long been a favourite for tourists seeking adventures like helicopter rides over the falls or wildlife safaris in nearby reserves. However, a lease disagreement led to its closure in 2023, leaving the site dormant and impacting local employment.

Under ASB’s ownership through Makasa Sun (Private) Limited—the previous operator jointly held by First Capital Bank and its pension fund—the hotel is expected to undergo upgrades and rebranding. This mirrors ASB’s successful revamp of the Meikles Hotel into the Hyatt Regency Harare – The Meikles, which has elevated standards and drawn international guests. The relaunch could include enhanced facilities like spas, conference spaces, and eco-friendly features to appeal to modern travellers, potentially creating hundreds of jobs in housekeeping, guiding, and supply chains.

The property’s location near Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, positions it perfectly for Zimbabwe’s tourism push. The falls alone generate significant revenue, with activities like bungee jumping and river cruises adding to the allure.

ASB Hospitality’s African Expansion: Building a Luxury Network

ASB Hospitality, headquartered in Dubai, is part of the family-owned Albwardy Investment group, which has roots in East Africa and a focus on upscale accommodations. Led by Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Aldhaheri, the firm emphasises sustainable operations and community benefits, aligning with Zimbabwe’s goals for eco-tourism.

The company’s entry into Zimbabwe began with the $20 million Meikles acquisition in 2019, transforming it into a five-star Hyatt property that has boosted Harare’s appeal for business travellers. More recently, ASB expanded in Zambia with the Taj Pamodzi stake, showing a clear strategy to grow in southern Africa. With 18 properties worldwide, ASB brings expertise in managing high-end resorts, which could help elevate Zimbabwe’s offerings to compete with regional hotspots like South Africa’s Kruger or Botswana’s Okavango Delta.

For First Capital Bank, the sale allows a shift back to core banking activities, using proceeds to cover taxes and enhance operations. The bank’s pension fund, a co-owner, also benefits, securing returns for members in a volatile economy.

A Closer Look: Key Facts on the Deal and Its Impact

1/ ASB Hospitality, a Dubai-based arm of Albwardy Investment, manages 18 luxury properties across four continents with over 1,300 rooms.

2/ The Kingdom Hotel boasts 294 rooms and sits just minutes from Victoria Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage site drawing 400,000 visitors yearly.

3/ ASB’s first Zimbabwe buy was the Meikles Hotel in Harare for $20-million in 2019, now rebranded as Hyatt Regency Harare – The Meikles.

4/ ASB recently grabbed a majority stake in Lusaka’s Taj Pamodzi Hotel in Zambia, expanding its African holdings.

This acquisition not only revives a key asset but also hints at more investments in Zimbabwe’s tourism, supporting the nation’s recovery and creating opportunities for communities around iconic sites like Victoria Falls. As ASB plans the relaunch, locals and travellers alike can look forward to upgraded experiences that blend luxury with Zimbabwe’s natural beauty.

First Capital Bank to sell former ‘Kingdom Hotel’ stake in USD 30m deal

First Capital Bank has announced a binding agreement to dispose of its full shareholding in Makasa Sun (Private) Limited, the company that owns the Makasa Sun Hotel, in a transaction valued at USD 30 million.

The Makasa Sun Hotel is the one formerly known as The Kingdom Hotel in Victoria Falls.

The deal, signed with ASB Hospitality LLC of the United Arab Emirates, will see the foreign investor acquire 100% of the hotel operator’s issued shares once all conditions precedent are met.

According to the bank’s latest statement, the purchaser has already placed a USD 3 million deposit into escrow, with the remaining USD 27 million to be paid upon completion. The sale is subject to regulatory approvals, including clearance from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, the Competition and Tariff Commission, COMESA, and the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority.

First Capital Bank said the disposal forms part of a strategic shift to unlock shareholder value by exiting non-core assets and refocusing on mainstream banking activities. ASB Hospitality, backed by an international hotel group, is expected to reposition the Makasa Sun Hotel and stimulate further investment in Zimbabwe’s tourism sector.

The bank emphasised that the sale will not have a significant impact on its historical or future earnings, as Makasa Sun has been recorded as a dormant entity. As at October 2024, Makasa Sun had a consolidated net asset value of approximately USD 27.9 million, though it has not been significantly reflected in the bank’s consolidated financials.

Proceeds from the transaction will be used to settle capital gains tax obligations and to distribute net receipts to both the bank and its staff pension fund, which jointly owned the hospitality asset. No securities are being exchanged as part of the agreement, and the deal will be settled entirely in cash.

The transaction qualifies as a Category 3 transaction on the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange. First Capital Bank advised shareholders and investors to continue exercising caution until full regulatory approval is confirmed and the disposal is finalised.

Bulawayo -Victoria Falls road rehabilitation works progressing well

THE rehabilitation of the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road is progressing, with contractors on the ground and civil works on-going.

In line with the government’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind, the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls road remains one of the high priority infrastructure projects, wholly funded by the Treasury.

On Tuesday, the ZBC News crew toured sections of the road and witnessed on-going compacting works in the Hwange – South mining area, among other road works.

The motoring public has expressed appreciation for the progress being made.

“This is exciting for us, especially those of us from Mozambique who love driving to Victoria Falls. The travel time is now shorter. We thank the Government of Zimbabwe for this initiative,” said a motorist.

“We will be travelling smoothly, and this will reduce operational costs. We will no longer be buying spare parts frequently,” added another.

The government says the entire road upgrade is expected to be completed by mid-2026.

“I am happy that the strategy we adopted in the ministry was to divide the entire 440 kilometres, focusing mainly between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, where each contractor is responsible for about 51 kilometres. We deployed the first five contractors who began working on the detours, and an additional three contractors have since joined. This means eight contractors are now working on the entire stretch. This rehabilitation is crucial because the road is a gateway to the tourist hub of our country, Victoria Falls,” said the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Honourable Felix Mhona.

Some sections of the road have since been completed and opened to traffic.

The Bulawayo–Victoria Falls road is a vital link in the North–South Corridor, connecting South Africa through the Beitbridge border post with Zambia via Victoria Falls and Kazungula.

Victoria Falls Border Post now open 24 hours, move set to boost tourism and trade

VICTORIA Falls Border Post will now process clients 24 hours of the day in a significant move expected to boost tourist arrivals and ensure seamless trade between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Through an Extraordinary Government Gazette, General Notice 2265A of 2025, issued recently, Secretary for Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Ambassador Raphael Faranisi, announced the policy shift.

“It is hereby declared that in terms of section 41 of the Immigration Act (Chapter 4:02), the Minister has extended the operating hours for the Victoria Falls Border Post to twenty-four (24) hours on a daily basis, with effect from the date of publication of this notice,” reads the notice published November 13.

The opening of the border post between Zimbabwe and Zambia is set to be accompanied by immense benefits, including boosting tourism. With the border now open round‑the‑clock, tourists can travel anytime, giving them flexibility to explore both sides of the majestic Victoria Falls without worrying about a curfew. This can make the famous “Smoke That Thunders” a more convenient bucket‑list experience.

Also, traders and truck drivers no longer face costly overnight delays or long queues waiting for the border to open. A 24‑hour operation means goods move faster, reducing transportation costs and helping businesses stay competitive.

It is a major win for cross‑border trade between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The latest development at Victoria Falls Border Post also improves cross‑border movements by local commuters, tourists, and business persons. A 24‑hour border means smoother, quicker travel. This likely encourages more people to travel between the two countries, fostering greater people‑to‑people connections.

Round-the-clock operations also minimise congestion as extending hours helps spread out traffic, decreasing the massive queues and congestion that used to happen when the border closed at 10pm.

Zimbabwe claims dramatic recovery in tourist arrivals

ZIMBABWE has received an estimated 1,6 million international tourists so far this year, marking one of the strongest post-Covid-19 pandemic recoveries in the region and underscoring renewed global confidence in Destination Zimbabwe.

At the peak of the pandemic in 2021, the country received approximately 375 799 tourists, a 40 percent decrease from the previous year, representing a continued decline from 2019, when the country had 2,29 million visitors before Covid-19 hit.

The United States has now become the country’s top international source market, overtaking the United Kingdom and Germany, a shift tourism authorities say reflects growing interest in Zimbabwe’s wildlife, culture, gastronomy and natural heritage.

The rise in tourist arrivals has coincided with increased global attention, including Zimbabwe being named the World’s Number One Destination to Visit in 2025 by Forbes, an influential United States-based business and lifestyle magazine.

The recognition, combined with stronger air connectivity, infrastructure upgrades and intensified marketing efforts, has pushed Zimbabwe’s tourism sector into what the authorities describe as a decisive growth phase.

In an interview, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Barbara Rwodzi said the country was now preparing for a significant surge in travel during the festive season, with the Government activating a whole-of-government approach to guarantee a smooth experience for both domestic and international visitors.

“The sector contributes 3,5 percent of total national employment,” she said. “In 2024, the sector accounted for 17 percent of overall national GDP (gross domestic product) growth. Flight searches increased by 80 percent and 56 percent in Bulawayo and Harare, respectively.

“International tourist arrivals recorded to date are 1,32 million, exclusive of our diaspora community. Factoring in diasporans, international tourist arrivals are estimated at 1,603 million.”

Minister Rwodzi said domestic tourism grew by 20,9 percent, with trips rising from an estimated 8,2 million (2024) to 9,92 million (2025)

“The United States has now overtaken the United Kingdom and Germany as the country’s top source market, reflecting renewed international confidence and appreciation for Zimbabwe’s pristine wilderness areas, such as Hwange National Park, Mana Pools and conservancies,” she said.

Minister Rwodzi said ahead of the festive season, teams will be deployed to airports, border posts, restaurants, entertainment venues and other high-traffic areas to ensure visitors receive efficient service and warm hospitality throughout the holiday period.

“During the festive season, people spend most of their time with family and friends, hence our focus shifts to the Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) Cluster, which resonates with recreational activities,” she said.

“To ensure excellent service and efficiency, our teams will be stationed in key areas such as restaurants, fast-food outlets and musical shows — where most festive gatherings take place.

“A central part of this is the meet and greet exercise at ports of entry, which captures the essence of Zimbabwean hospitality.”

Under this initiative, Minister Rwodzi said tourism officers and hospitality teams will be strategically deployed to major entry points, including the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, the Victoria Falls International Airport, the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport, and Beitbridge, Kazungula and Plumtree border posts.

The officers will assist travellers with information materials, facilitate queue management with immigration officials and ensure Zimbabwe’s first impression is welcoming, organised and professional.

Minister Rwodzi said the festive season preparations included beautification of urban and resort centres, enhanced road and signage updates, safety inspections of accommodation facilities and close coordination with provincial authorities to maintain consistent service standards across the country.

The Government has since launched a major push to promote domestic tourism during the holidays — the Domestic Tourism Festive Season Campaign — which was unveiled in Kariba on October 31.

The initiative is aimed at encouraging Zimbabweans to explore local attractions under the themes #NhakaYedu, #IlifaLethu, #ExperienceZimbabwe and #ZimBho.

Said Minister Rwodzi: “This initiative aims to foster a culture of travel among Zimbabweans and those in the diaspora, encouraging them to embrace the festive spirit of Zimbabwe.

“The central message will be a call to action: ‘Experience Zimbabwe this Festive Season’.

“To meet these objectives, the campaign will implement an integrated approach, combining marketing, content creation, collaboration.”

The ministry is engaging industry to come up with promotional packages for domestic tourists.

“To raise awareness and reach a wider audience, the ministry is running adverts on television and radio, complemented by targeted messaging on social media platforms,” she said.

“We are also awaiting festive season packages from the private sector, while ZimParks (Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority) will soon provide their own packages to the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority and we will advertise these packages on their behalf to promote exciting holiday options across the country.”

Minister Rwodzi said the sector’s overall performance continues to be strengthened by improved air connectivity, with Zimbabwe now having 22 international airlines servicing its major airports, up from only three in 2020.

Airlines such as Ethiopian Airlines, Fastjet, Eurowings Discover and Air Zimbabwe have increased flight frequencies, improving access into Harare, Victoria Falls and Bulawayo and supporting the rebound in tourist arrivals.

Flight searches for Zimbabwe have grown sharply this year, increasing by 80 percent for Bulawayo and 56 percent for Harare, indicating heightened global interest in the destination.

Cumulative investments in the sector have reached US$910 million over the last five years, covering hotel construction, conferencing facilities and major upgrades to airports and resort infrastructure.

Police in Southern Province have confirmed the death of an American tourist who drowned during a rafting expedition on the Zambezi River near Victoria Falls.

Southern Province Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo said the victim, identified as Patrick Lawrence, 68, died after the raft he was navigating capsized at Rapid Number 7 last evening.

Mr Namalongo confirmed the death of 68-year-old Patrick Lawrence in a statement to the media in Livingstone this morning.

“We can confirm that Mr Lawrence, an American national, tragically drowned during a rafting activity on the Zambezi River...

He said the accident ... was reported by Mr Obey Hamuchemba, 47, Director at Nyami Nyami Rafting Company, who was overseeing the activity.

Investigations indicate that Mr Lawrence was leading a team of ten paddlers when the raft overturned.

American river guide Lawrence Patrick Firman dies while kayaking the Zambezi

Lawrence Patrick Firman, 68 years old, an expert kayaker and rafting guide for over 35 consecutive seasons in the USA, died while kayaking the Zambezi river on November 13, 2025. “Larry” was part of a group of over a dozen river guides (including several Zambian guides and also one non-river guide participant) who had completed a 12-day expedition trip down the Zambezi river during which Larry had kayaked through the main rapids on the river successfully. On the day after the expedition trip ended, most of the same group were doing a day-trip through the main rapids section of the river again along with 3 local river guides (from Zambia and Zimbabwe, with leader Thando Lungu) when the incident occurred. This group of 12 river guides plus 1 non-guide were in 2 paddle rafts and 2 kayaks. The two kayakers were Larry and another expert kayaker and river guide from Mexico (Uriel Arroyo).
According to Uriel, who was close to Larry on the water as the incident occurred, they entered Rapid #7 just before 3 pm and kayaked through most of the rapid to the very end section known as Land of the Giants, where Larry entered a big hole that flipped him. [Mr Firman appears to have subsequently drowned attempting to roll the kayak back upright. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.] (Facebook, 17th November 2025)

Mnangagwa, Hichilema co-chair Zimbabwe-Zambia BNC

President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his Zambian counterpart Hakainde Hichilema are co-chairing the inaugural Zimbabwe-Zambia Bi-National Commission (BNC) in Harare on Friday, marking a historic upgrade in diplomatic relations between the two neighbours after 45 years of cooperation.

The BNC replaces the long-standing Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation, elevating bilateral engagement to a more strategic and results-oriented framework.

The launch coincides with the 45th anniversary of formal diplomatic ties between Zimbabwe and Zambia, rooted in a shared liberation history and decades of collaboration in trade, energy, tourism, and regional integration.

Ministerial and senior officials’ meetings have been underway in Harare since Wednesday, laying the groundwork for expanded cooperation across key sectors.

The BNC is expected to serve as a platform for translating diplomatic dialogue into measurable outcomes that benefit both nations and the broader Southern African region.

The two countries, which share the Victoria Falls and Kariba Dam along Zambezi River, currently cooperate in the areas of energy generation, tourism and the conservation of wildlife resources.

They are working towards the implementation of the joint management plan for the Victoria Falls World Heritage Site and the operationalisation of the 24-hour Victoria Falls-Livingstone One Stop Border Post.

Kanona Power Company To Establish Solar And Coal Energy Plants In Mukuni

By Esnart Siloka

Mukuni Chiefdom is once again becoming a center of investment following a proposal by Kanona Power Company Limited to establish two major power generation projects: a 300-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant and a 150MW solar power plant.

The coal project will occupy more than 200 hectares of land located behind the Mukuni Substation, while the solar plant will be set up on 67 hectares of land across the road from the same substation.

During a public consultative meeting held at Simukale Royal Shrine, Kazungula Town Council Secretary Lubinda Mwala represented by Director of Planning, Martin Munyinda expressed the local authority's full support for the project.

Project Consultant Maxwell Chibanga explained that the project will require the construction of a 5.5-kilometre railway line to facilitate the transportation of raw materials such as coal from Zimbabwe, as well as a 9.5-kilometre water pipeline from the Zambezi River to the project site.

Mr. Chibanga outlined several benefits of the project, including job creation for skilled, semi-skilled, and casual workers, with a strong emphasis on gender sensitivity.

Meanwhile, Chiefdom Prime Minister Patrick Malake, who officiated at the event, reiterated his call for honesty from developers during the implementation process.

Mr. Malake also warned subordinate authorities against selfishness, particularly regarding the employment of local people.

A ward official, McMillan Mukwamandi, raised concerns about the welfare of animals in the area, particularly grazing land and access to water, appealing to the developers to ensure adequate alternative grazing areas and water resources for livestock.

The projects are set for May 2026.

Zimbabwe Extends Victoria Falls Border Post Hours To 24/7

Victoria Falls Border Post Now Open 24 Hours A Day

In a dramatic move set to transform regional travel, the Zimbabwean government has declared that the Victoria Falls Border Post will now operate twenty-four hours a day. This immediate change, announced in an extraordinary government gazette on Thursday, November 14, 2025, signals a major shift for one of the country’s most vital ports of entry. The border, which previously closed its gates at 10PM, will never sleep again.

The official announcement was made by Nick Mangwana on X, where he shared the pivotal news. The legal basis for this round-the-clock operation is General Notice 2265A of 2025, issued under the Immigration Act.

Mangwana posted:

VICTORIA FALLS AIRPORT NOW OPERATING 24/7. Act [Chapter 4:02], the Minister has extended the operating hours for the Victoria Falls Border Post to twenty-four (24) hours on a daily basis, with effect from the date of publication of this notice.”

The notice itself was formally signed by the Secretary for Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Raphael Faranisi. This administrative leap is widely seen as a direct effort to boost tourism and simplify cross-border trade and movement between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

A Boost For Tourism And Trade

Industry experts are hailing the decision as a game-changer. The extended hours provide unprecedented flexibility for tourists wishing to experience both sides of the majestic Victoria Falls, known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke That Thunders), without being constrained by a strict curfew.

The move is also a major win for cross-border traders and truck drivers, who often faced long queues and costly overnight delays waiting for the gates to reopen at 6AM.

Timing Coincides With High-Level Talks

The border announcement came at a strategically significant moment. It was published just a day before President Emmerson Mnangagwa was scheduled to host Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema in Harare. The two leaders were set to convene for the inaugural session of the Zambia-Zimbabwe Bi-National Commission on Friday, November 15, 2025.

While not explicitly stated in the gazette, the timing strongly suggests that improved cross-border cooperation was a key item on their agenda. According to the original reporting, the move is expressly intended to “facilitate tourism and trade and improve cross-border movement between Zimbabwe and Zambia.”

Helipad game changer for Vic Falls tourism

A new helipad, built at a cost of US$2.5 million, opened in Victoria Falls on Wednesday, highlighting an upward trajectory in the tourism industry in the City.

Victoria Falls is Zimbabwe’s tourism capital, a melting pot for travellers from across the globe.

The new facility was built by Zambezi Helicopter Company, a partnership company between two leading tour operators in the City.

The City of Victoria Falls partnered in the construction of a new modern access road, about 800 metres to the helipad.

Zambezi Helicopter Company has since relocated from its old site off Park Way, to the new site located in the industrial area near the gorges.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona was guest of honour, accompanied by Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Barbara Rwodzi and Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Richard Moyo at the official opening of the milestone facility.

The project highlights investor confidence and infrastructure growth in Victoria Falls, as well as Government’s commitment to facilitating partnerships in line with the “Zimbabwe is open for business” mantra.

Transport Minister Mhona said the project highlights the symbiotic relationship between Government and the private sector which is partaking in the infrastructure development, with the state-of-the-art helipad that gives confidence to the investors.

“It resonates very well with the mantra of His Excellency Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa that Zimbabwe is open for business and we are a friend to all and enemy to none. So, investors are free to come and also exercise their rights in terms of investment in the country.

“Transport, being the economic enabler, we're happy that going forward, we call upon the private sector to also come together and partner government so that we have a number of these projects,” he said.

Tourism Minister Rwodzi said such developments help Victoria Falls receive recognition such as the recent naming as a must-visit destination for 2025 by Forbes magazine.

“This new infrastructure is speaking volumes in terms of confidence that can be invested in Zimbabwe, let alone in Victoria Falls. This is just demonstrating the growth of our industry sector for tourism in the country and as it is contributing much to the GDP,” she said.

Rwodzi said tourism was number one contributor to the growth of the GDP last year.

From just five employees at inception, Zambezi Helicopters now employs 60 people.

Matabeleland North Minister of State, Moyo, said the investment empowers local communities, and unlocking local opportunities.

“It will create jobs, enhance tourism and improve emergency response capabilities in the province,” he said.

Shearwater Adventures CEO Mr Allan Roberts said the tour operator has been operating helicopters in Victoria Falls since the mid-1990s.

“The business is growing, tourism is growing, there's expansion in the industry. We wanted to set a new standard and try and take tourism facilities and aviation facilities to a new standard. So, the facility you see here is world-class, it's air-conditioned, it has a premier class lounge, it can serve over a 100 000 people a year.

“So we really wanted to build something which would take us into the next chapter of our growth and add value to the tourism industry and try and establish Zimbabwe as a world-class tourism destination,” he said.
