MOSI-OA-TUNYA Development Company (Private) Limited (MOTDC), the Government’s entity mandated to develop tourism infrastructure in Victoria Falls, has hit the ground running, touring key infrastructure projects under its portfolio as part of a familiarisation drive in Victoria Falls.
The company serves as the Government’s investment arm for the Victoria Falls Special Economic Zone.
The recently appointed board, led by Engineer Phineas Makombe, was appointed by Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Barbara Rwodzi.
The meeting was aimed at enabling the board to gain a deeper appreciation of the company’s mandate, operations and priority programmes aligned to the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2).
“Mosi-Oa-Tunya Development Company (Private) Limited, the Government’s entity mandated to develop tourism infrastructure in Victoria Falls, under the stewardship of its newly appointed board led by chairperson Mr Phineas Makombe, convened a familiarisation meeting in Victoria Falls to gain a deeper appreciation of the company’s mandate, operations and priority programmes aligned to the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2),” the ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry said in an update.
Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Dr Takaruza Munyanyiwa and the Finance Director Mr Collins Chirume, the board toured the company’s current offices, the Multi-purpose Cricket Stadium set to host the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and offices under construction, gaining first-hand insight into projects enhancing destination competitiveness, advancing sports tourism and elevating the overall tourist experience.
The familiarisation programme allowed the board to interact with management on ongoing and planned developments that are central to positioning Victoria Falls as a world-class tourism and sports destination, in line with the Government’s broader economic transformation agenda.
“The engagement marked a strong and proactive opening phase to the board’s tenure, reaffirming its commitment to sound corporate governance, strategic oversight and the accelerated delivery of world-class Tourism Infrastructure in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe’s iconic tourism hub,” read the update.
Mosi-Oa-Tunya Development Company plays a strategic role in spearheading tourism infrastructure development in Victoria Falls, a key pillar of Zimbabwe’s tourism sector and a major contributor to national development targets under NDS2.
Through the development of tourism facilities and related infrastructure, the company directly supports the ministry’s objectives of increasing tourist arrivals, expanding accommodation capacity, improving tourist experiences, attracting both domestic and foreign direct investment, promoting inclusive and sustainable tourism development.
MOTDC owns Lot 1 of Jafuta Estate in Victoria Falls, measuring 271,5 hectares and intends to develop this property into a world-class integrated tourism resort.
The proposed development is located within the broader Masuwe area, which measures approximately 1 200 hectares.
The Masuwe area is bound by the Victoria Falls City to the north, Fuller Forest to the south, Remainder of Ursula Estate and Nakavango and the Victoria Falls-Bulawayo railway line to the west and the Victoria Falls-Bulawayo Road to the east.
The development approach for the area seeks to enhance and diversify tourism through developing tourism and business facilities that blend well with the natural environment and existing ecotourism activities in line with the world heritage site principles.
The proposed integrated tourism resort will accommodate the central business district, medical tourism facility, golf estate, civic centre, holiday homes, hotels, villas, sports facilities, international finance centre, duty-free trade zone, a hotel school and conference facilities.
