Mudenda calls for more tollgates on Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road to fund rehabilitation

Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda has called for additional tollgates on the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road to accelerate its rehabilitation and upgrading.

Speaking at the 2027 National Pre-budget Seminar in Bulawayo on Wednesday, Mudenda urged policymakers to find sustainable ways of financing major national projects without putting excessive pressure on the fiscus.

“Why not put more money on the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road? Put more tollgates; I know some people criticise me, but the truth is sometimes it’s painful,” he said.

He said extra tollgates, similar to those on the Harare–Bulawayo Road, could help raise funds for the highway.

The Bulawayo–Victoria Falls Road is a key transport link connecting Zimbabwe’s second-largest city with one of its main tourism destinations. Its improvement is expected to support tourism, trade and the movement of agricultural produce, minerals and other goods.

Mudenda said infrastructure financing should also come from institutional investors, including pension and insurance funds, provided the investments were commercially viable and protected the interests of contributors and policyholders.
